Leeds Rugby League Heritage Podcast | Ep 6 Wally Lewis

On Thursday we will learn more about Leeds' first ever Australian player Dinny Campbell but first up Jamie Jones-Buchanan chats to Wally 'The King' Lewis on a recent visit to AMT Headingley.
One of the most spectacularly talented players in the history of the game the career of Wally Lewis may have divided the League world in its devotion of him but there was no denying his genius at five-eighth. He made his state debut as a halfback in 1980 before being selected as lock in Queensland's inaugural State of Origin team.
Lewis went on to captain the Maroons in 22 consecutive matches, with the 'State of Origin' concept riding on the back of his ability to motivate an entire state behind him. He was part of the Queensland side that played at Headingley in 1983 against Leeds. He made his Test debut against France in 1981 and was vice-captain of the 1982 Kangaroos, coming off the bench at Headingley. In 1984, he returned to England with Wakefield Trinity before coming back to these shores in 1986 for the Ashes tour.
Later a commentator with Channel 9 and FoxSports, Wally Lewis is remembered as one of the most competitive captains Australian sport has seen in any code. In 1999, Lewis’ name was belatedly added to list of post-war ‘Immortals’, joining Churchill, Raper, Fulton, Beetson, Gasnier and also Graeme Langlands, at the apex of the game’s greatest players.
